How far would you go to feed your family? For a loving grandfather, even letting go of his beloved old bike is worth it for a few packs of food for this family.
Lolo Marcelo captivated the hearts of many netizens when his photos selling his old bike became viral online. His photos and story were shared by Kingrobert Heredia of Ka Kanto on Facebook. In the photo, we can see an elderly man sitting on the side of the street holding his old bike. He was holding a sign that said, “For Sale.”
Kingrobert admitted he felt Lolo Marcelo’s sadness upon seeing the old man at the side of the street. He soon discovered that Lolo Marcelo was selling the bike for P1,500 to buy food for his family.
“Wala na po kasi kami kakainin. Pangkain sana namin ngayon,” Lolo Marcelo told Kingrobert.
Even more disheartening is that Lolo Marcelo thought he had a buyer for his bike, but he didn’t show up.
“‘Di kasi ako sinipot noong bibili ngayon. Baka may gusto bumili kaya pumwesto ako dito,” the old man said.
Proving the power of social media, the post awakened the goodness of people. In an unexpected act of kindness, the local government of San Pedro City, Laguna, where Lolo Marcelo lives, decided to give the old man a treat.
On Facebook, the official page of the San Pedro Public Affairs and Information Office shared photos of how the local government provided Lolo Marcelo with some assistance.
Through the Pamahalaang Lungsod ng Livelihood Program, Lolo Marcelo was given cash aid and groceries for his family to enjoy.
The post stated:
“Maraming salamat po sa lahat ng naging daan upang makarating sa Pamahalaang Lungsod ng San Pedro ang kalagayan ni Lolo Marcelo. Tulong-tulong tayo upang palaging una ang mamamayan sa Lungsod ng San Pedro. Maraming salamat muli sa inyong mabubuting puso!“
