They also give world-class performances in the international music scene, and are recognized for their singing talents by international fans and even Hollywood celebrities.
Broadway Filipino singers such as Lea Salonga and Rachel Ann-Go are deemed for their amazing talents in singing and acting and are considered pride of the country. Recently, another ‘proud Filipina’ was added to the list of musical stars as she landed a role in an upcoming animated film on Netflix.
Chinese-Filipino thespian, Cathy Ang, who is based in New York, landed the role of Fei Fei, the protagonist in the upcoming animated Netflix film “Over the Moon” which will be released on October 23.
In a recent media conference, Philstar got the chance to talk with the film’s director, Oscar-winning animator Glen Keane, where he shared the reasons on how he knew that Cathy was perfect for the role of Fei Fei.
“The main character of the movie has to carry an enormous weight because… she is the vehicle that we are going to travel through this film with. And this story is going to take people through pain and loss,” Glen explained.
“We needed an actress who could deliver that kind of sincerity. And if you meet Cathy Ang, this is a woman who exudes a warmth. Her heart, her sincerity, you can’t help but love her,” Glen added.
He also shared that when he started talking to Cathy, he already knew that the role of Fei Fei is perfect for her. “I just believed this girl… there’s this sparkle in her eyes,” he said.
The production team was also blown away when they heard Cathy’s voice after her single-take scratch recording of the movie’s signature song, “Rocket to the Moon.”
“We were exploding with excitement. And that first take in its entirety is the actual take that you hear in the final version of the film,” producer Peilin Chou said in song’s making video.
