- Maverick, the famous supportive brother who went viral made an equally stunning masterpiece for his sister last year
- It was a Panagbenga Festival attire for a beauty pageant
- The costume won Best in Festival attire and his sister landed 1st-runner up in the beauty contest
Remember the supportive Kuya who rose to fame for making a stunning gown for his sister’s JS prom? Here is a flashback on another creation he previously made for her.
It was September 2019 and he was so happy after learning his sister was joining a pageant in their school in Basilan — Mr. and Miss Intramurals 2019. He knew that it was always her wish to be walking on stage someday.
She approached him saying she needed a Panagbenga Festival attire for her production number. He thought it would be costly to rent and challenging to search for that motif since that design is rare in Zamboanga City. Commonly seen costumes for rent are Sinulog, Ati-Atihan, Maskara and Zamboanga Hermosa festival attires only.
They found one outfit at a shop but his sister didn’t want to wear it. The dress was so revealing and it looked a little overused; not worth for the price of P3-4K rental budget provided by his sister’s section.
Seeing his passion and talent, she begged him to make one for her instead. Maverick was hesitant at first because he knew nothing about festival costumes. But then two weeks before the pageant, he accepted the challenge. He searched on YouTube for ideas and finally got a concept from the Bb. Pilipinas National Costume of Puerto Princessa Palawan which was Philippine Pandikan inspired. He added a flora and fauna theme to give it a Panagbenga touch.
Then came the coronation night. His sister won the Best in Festival Attire! He just couldn’t believe they wiped out some famous designers in town. To make him even happier, his sister landed 1st runner up in the pageant; not bad for a first-timer.
Maverick Francisco Oyao is taking up Bachelor of Culture and Arts Education at the Western Mindanao State University. We are more than impressed to see not just his masterpieces but also his support for his sister.
He quoted, “I hope I can inspire you to love our siblings even more kahit na walang kapalit.”
