Kobe Bryant married Vanessa Bryant in 2001 despite his parents’ disapproval because she is a Latina. They were blessed with four children, daughters Natalia, 17, Gianna, 13,  Bianka, 3, and Capri, 7 months.

In 2003, he was charged for allegedly forcing a 19-year-old woman into an intimate encounter in his room at a hotel in Colorado.  He was able to resolve the issue with her. His wife, Vanessa, was by his side at that time and even held hands with him during his public apology.

During this ordeal, a priest helped him make important realizations in his life.  He was told to move on. “God’s not going to give you anything you can’t handle,” Kobe recalled.  That was the turning point in his life.

Yet his faith was tested in 2011 when his wife filed for divorce; citing irreconcilable differences. But the legend did not give up on his marriage.  According to him, he’s determined as an athlete, might as well he should be in his personal life.  He didn’t want his kids to be affected.

Two years later, Vanessa withdrew her petition, as per reports.  Kobe was  still vocal that his married life is not perfect and he was determined to work it out.  The five-time NBA champion said in an episode of Showtime Basketball’s All the Smoke, “Commitment and [the] competitiveness of ‘We’re going to succeed,’ ” was crucial. He mentioned that solidarity between the couple is needed.  And that they were able to overcome those very tough things with persistence and determination.

The couple was reportedly often seen attending mass at an Orange County, California Parish. Some witnesses said that he even joined a mass with his daughter Gianna before leaving on a helicopter.

Kobe was the family man somebody who stumbled could seek inspiration from.  Unfortunately, he was gone too soon.  The champ and his daughter Gianna were not able to survive a helicopter crash at Calabasas on Sunday.
