Proving that there is really no deadline for individual success, a habal-habal driver who was forced to quit school due to poverty has finally finished college, 15 years after completing high school! But his success was made all the sweeter by the fact that he is graduating from college as magna cum laude!
Joyce Dublin of Daanbantayan, Cebu graduated from high school as valedictorian but while he seemed to have the brightest future in the batch, he was left behind by everyone because his mother was too poor to send him to college as she was only selling bread for a living.
So, after graduation, Dublin went to work as stockroom checker in a supermarket in the city. But after 5 years, he went back to Daanbantayan as he terribly missed working away from his family. He became a habal-habal driver in his hometown.

One day, a passenger who learned of his plight promised to help him finish his studies. Grabbing that opportunity and accepting that generous passenger’s offer, Dublin enrolled in Bachelor of Secondary Education, Major in Mathematics at Cebu Technological University-Daanbantayan Campus.
Being out of school for so long, it was certainly a bit of a struggle for Dublin to be studying again but his brilliance soon stood out and he was able to keep up with his classmates.
“Discipline is the key,” Dublin shared his secret.
According to him, our struggles in life are just like a math problem, “It takes hard work and a whole lot of faith to arrive at the right formula for success.” He’s definitely found his formula for success as he graduates magna cum laude!
He might be late by a decade, but he’s definitely catching up real fast! A review center has already given him full discount so he could complete his goals and become a fully licensed teacher.
Congratulations to you, Sir Joyce Dublin! You are an inspiration to many…
