8-year-old Pinay skater wins Gold at the Skates Emirates 2018

An eight-year-old Filipina has wowed the audience and judges at the Skates Emirates 2018 held in Abu Dhabi.

Megan Orcilla took with her some ‘Pinoy Pride’ as she won not just one but two medals at the the skating competition. Megan took home the Gold medal for Freestyle 2 level for Character Dramatic Spotlight and Silver medal for Solo Compulsories.

The young skater revealed that her interest in skating began when she became fascinated with the Dubai Ice Rink in Dubai Mall.

Megan shared with The Filipino Times: “I asked Mom and Dad if I can skate. A few weeks after that, I was learning to step and walk on ice with a private coach. Since then, I have experienced dancing as Rapunzel, Cinderella and most recently Ballerina.”

Megan’s mother, Kath Orcilla, shared that the family truly supports their daughter’s interest. She would always motivate Megan to set her eyes on the goals. She said, “I do not dwell on her petty whining. I remind her of the goal and what we want to achieve at the end. This will encourage her to stand up and continue.”

Megan’s hard work paid off as she has been slowly making a name in the skating world.

During last year’s Skate Emirates, she won 3 gold medals in the Delta level. When she was 6 years old, Megan participated in the Figure Skating Dubai held at Al Nasr.

Although, Megan was born and raised in the UAE, she proudly honored the Philippines in her win. She said, “I am proud to represent my Dubai Ice Rink Ice Skating team and the Philippines. It is a privilege to have our country’s flag on my jacket.”
