A member of Gaddang indigenous group from Isabela has recently gone viral for her incredible achievement at a university in the US – for not only did she graduate with the highest possible honors, summa cum laude, but also completed three majors at once! Wow.
Janelle Micaela Panganiban finished three majors: Global Public Health, Public Policy, and Sociology from the prestigious New York University (NYU), one of the largest private universities in the United States.
This amazing young lady graduated summa cum laude, a feat that only very few people get to achieve.
As one of the top-ranking graduates from the university, Janelle gets to use a gold tassel on her graduation cap, instead of the usual purple that the other graduates wear.
Aside from her summa cum laude honor, Janelle was also awarded the Alexander L. Shluger award as well as the Founder’s Day award for excellence in sociology.
“I really learned to love learning, parang sabi ko po talaga, only in college na ma-experience mo ‘yung like the sense of wonder and curiosity sa world and like being at NYU, they were able to provide that,” Janelle told ABS-CBN News.
But while she certainly has a lot of chances in the US, what with her achievements, Janelle wants to work in the Philippines, to teach young minds and make a difference.
“The idea that there’s so many Filipinos who are not at home, to me like that was, I felt I had to contribute something and that’s what kind of tied me to the Philippines, in a way [that] I really don’t want to forget [the] idealism of wanting to do something for the country,” she revealed.
Janelle will also be among those who will receive the Northern Star Award from the Philippine Consulate General for excellent academic achievement.
Congratulations, Janelle! We’re proud of you.
