Social media has been abuzz over the supposed ‘prenup’ of celebrity couple Billy Crawford and Coleen Garcia in Ethiopia. A major issue regarding the photos is that a lot of Filipino netizens are calling the photos as racist, slamming the couple for having photos taken with natives.
Many said that it was unfair and rather tasteless for the couple to look like they were rich folks dressed up to the nines, with the natives in the background because this made it appear as if the poorer folks were their slaves.
The couple has since issued a statement regarding the photos, saying they had no intention of making it appear like what netizens think; in fact, Billy claimed, the people in the photo actually had fun during their photoshoot, especially the kids.
But there was another thing that got netizens interested with the supposed prenup photos.
Netizen Janelle Payumo shared a photo of her mother’s rather modest-looking bag which appeared to have the same print as that of Billy’s shirt in the photoshoot! Ooops. Netizens laughed at Billy’s outfit, calling it ‘cheap’. Sigh.
Another netizen snapped a photo of a reversible placement that bore the same print as Coleen’s outfit! Major faux pas?
Stylist Adrianne Concepcion responded to the clothes issue, saying she sees nothing wrong with the two wearing textile fabric. She even complimented Filipino designer Ryan Uson for coming up with the design using such a material.
“Given that we do not have specific African prints which are native to their region, our local designers had the creative liberty to render their own interpretations.
“I gave designer Ryan Uson a short brief on the commissioned suit. I said I wanted it to have earthy green tones in bold prints to compliment that of Coleen’s, and I think he delivered well,” the stylist explained.
To find the fabric he needed, the designer went to a ‘very famous fabric shop’ where many, if not all designers frequent for fabric textiles.
It so happened that the design he chose has actually been used in many items, including the bag of Janelle’s mom.
“As I have learned in recent days, the same fabric allegedly has been used to make a modest-looking bag. I see no fault in this as the chances of having multiple designers or sewing enthusiasts use the same fabric here in the country are high.”
“I personally see it as a show of realized potential of things. That fabric may very well have been sewn into anything. We saw its beauty, used it to make a suit, and it turned out great,” the stylist added.
But how did Billy and Coleen feel about wearing the ‘cheap’ outfits?
Well, he actually found it rather hilarious. The actor posted a photo on his Instagram page, captioning it with, “All around pala ang telang ito.”
“Seriously, sa lahat ng gumawa nito, salamat binuhay niyo [ang] katawang lupa namin pero pinatay niyo ang stylist namin!” he added in jest.
