OFW Shares Chat Messages with Abusive Friend Who Keeps Asking Money for His Family

Many Filipinos have this wrong notion that those who are working outside the Philippines are rich and have a lot of money to spare, forgetting that these overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) might be earning *more* money than their local counterparts but they are also spending a lot of money at the place they are working in.

Moreover, these OFWs also have families to support as well as themselves.

One OFW, Mharlon Prieto Rioveros, shared screenshots of his chat messages with a friend back in the Philippines.

At first Rioveros sent money to this friend to help with his family’s budget for the day but the abusive friend was quite persistent to the point of being almost demanding as he wanted the OFW to send money immediately because his family didn’t have anything to eat.

When the money came, the friend didn’t even thank the OFW; instead, he lamented that the money was less than what he had asked because the remittance outlet got a portion of the amount in fees. He also pointed out that the money was only enough for the family’s 2-day budget, not the 1-week he had asked his friend. The nerve of this guy!

While Rioveros gently reminded him that it was his responsibility to find a job to feed his family, the unnamed friend continued to ask money. The latter also told Rioveros he needed to have his younger child’s eyes checked.

Afterwards, this friend began to ask the OFW for more money, even asking for load for his wife! Tsk. Tsk. Tsk.

Feeling angry over the abusive friend’s barrage of messages, the OFW posted screenshots and admonished the unnamed friend for abusing his kindness, pointing out that he’s not picking money off the streets as he worked outside the country. He also advised his friend to man up and find a job to support his family, and not to rely on others to feed his kids.
