The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas formally launched the new designs for the Philippine coins. Known as the New Generation Coin series, these new designs feature three of the national heroes of the Philippines, plants that can be found only in the country, various security enhancement, and new materials.
Enhanced Security
These new coins are comprised of 10-pesos, 5-pesos, 1-peso, 25-cents, 5-cents, and 1-cent that will be used in circulation. According to BSP, these New Generation Coins features enhanced aesthetics and security of the coins. The details in the two highest denominated coins are micro-printed using laser-engraving technology, making it difficult for these coins to be duplicated using traditional coin counterfeiting methods.
The coins also have a metallic composition that discourages the illegal practice of hoarding large quantities of coins. These coins are also corrosion resistant and discoloration-proof since they are made from durable nickel-plated steel in place of an alloy.

BSP clarified that the existing coins will remain as legal tender and can still be used alongside the NGC series for day-to-day transactions when paying for goods and services until BSP calls for their demonization.
