Cops serving a court order for the eviction of tenants at an apartment in Salmiya, Kuwait found the body of a woman inside a freezer at an abandoned unit. Its previous tenants have now been tagged as primary suspects, especially because the dead body was believed to have been kept in that freezer for over a year.
The landlord and caretaker of the building were shocked over the discovery. The apartment had not been rented since the previous tenants left in Kuwait in 2016. The tenants were a Lebanese man and a Syrian woman who had a Filipina maid.
The Lebanese man fled Kuwait after he was convicted of charges related to fake checks. The landlord had no idea where the couple went or what happened to their maid but it was believed that the body in the freezer was, in fact, the Filipina.
After the body was found, the cops turned it over to the General Department of Criminal Evidences for an autopsy. While the cause of death was yet to be determined, Kuwait Times reported that there were torture marks all over the body as well as stab wounds on the neck.
The names of the suspects as well as the victim have been withheld, pending investigation.
Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III clarified, “Our labor attache is still verifying if the corpse is that of a Filipina.”
If the body was that of the Pinay maid, then this cements the Philippines’ stand as it put a ban against the deployment of new domestic helpers to Kuwait for the overwhelming cases of abuse reported in that country.
