Southstar Drug, in collaboration with Unilab Foundation’s Project Inclusion, launched their Persons with Disabilities (PWD) hiring program last December 2016. The hired PWDs underwent training from Unilab Foundation.
During the recruitment process, the PWDs were treated as regular applicants, and the decision-making process was the same as hiring a typical employee.
“The problem right now in our society is we look at disability first and nothing beyond that. However, we look at the PWDs’ potential and expertise first, and their disability just comes second,” Michael Sabino, HR and Admin Division Manager of Southstar Drug told Smartparenting.com.ph.
The PWDs were hired as probationary employees and had the potential to become regular employees if they were able to pass the evaluation process.
At present, 24 PWDs were employed as Southstar Drug as employees. The majority were assigned to the drugstore branches while the others were assigned to the head office.
Southstar ***** employees also received training from Unilab on how to treat and interact with their PWD co-employees. They were told that they do not have to give the new hires special treatment.
The PWD recruitment program of Southstar ***** is not a charity cause. The PWDs were given the same responsibilities, just like a regular employee. They will also undergo the same evaluation process for regularization if their performance shows that they are capable of handling the position and are dependable workers.
The Southstar ***** are only employing PWDs for their Manila branches but will soon expand to nationwide recruitment, if the program becomes successful.
