A number of patients have died in the Philippines after they were refused treatment in hospitals because they had no money to pay for the required down payment – even if their families begged for the hospital staff to attend to their needs as they would just try to find money later on.
While the staff are often only forced to do this because of hospital policy, this did not also prevent the patients’ families from blaming them for the deaths – with some even going viral on social media for these situations.
Thanks to Pres. Rodrigo Duterte, however, this practice might soon be ending! Cebu Flash Report released a copy of the memo from the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (formerly Southern Islands Medical Center) entitled, “Duterte Health Agenda – Emergency Department Services”.
