Marie Ku Maureen Ceniza was already on her way home but aboard a jeep in Cebu City, central Philippines, she met a streetkid singing a Tagalog Christmas song. While she wanted to give 9-year-old Janjan some money, she knew that this was against the anti-mendicancy law; so, on a whim, she told him she’d treat him to dinner, instead.
The other passengers looked at her like she’d gone crazy but Ceniza was determined to help the kid out. She bought him a rice meal while she indulged in a serving of spaghetti. She texted her family that she was ‘on a date’ so they wouldn’t have to wait for her at dinner – and they actually thought she was out with some guy on a romantic date. Little did they know she was helping a little guy in need.
While on the ‘date’ with Janjan, she learned that the only time he was able to eat a Jollibee meal was when his mother brought them scraps she had scavenged from the trash.
Ceniza also noticed that Janjan only ate half his chicken but when she offered to buy him more rice, he told her he was saving it for his mom and sibling. Touched by his thoughtfulness, she offered to buy them a separate meal so he could finish his food. Immediately, he picked up the remaining portion of the chicken and ‘ate it to the bones’!

WhIle I do agree that she shouldn’t have posted her good deeds on social media, I also understand her reasons for doing so. I guess she wants to set a good example to people and raise awareness that there are lots of street kids out there who are working hard to feed their families. We live in a cruel world where kids like janjan are judged. I’ve seen drivers treat people like janjan very rudely. Minsan kasi akala natin gagamitin lang nila pambili ng rugby or ipangsusugal lang nila yung perang napapalimos nila. We judge them based on what see on TV. We don’t realize that most of them just wants to help their families. So, to Ceniza, don’t pay attention to the bashers. You did a good thing. It doesn’t matter whether you posted it or not. What matters is that you helped a kid and his family that night. May nakain sila. Hindi sila nalipasan ng gutom ng gabing nakilala ka ni janjan.

Mabuhay ka Miss. Masarap sa pakiramdam yung kahit sa kaunting tulong may nagagawa ka kahit pantawid gutom lang sa mga katulad ng sitwasyon ng buhay nina Janjan. Hindi mahalag kung maliit or malaki. At don sa magiging bashers, pakitanong ang mga sarili kung ano ang nagawa nyo sa ibang tao na less fortunate. God Bless U more Miss.
