As the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit comes to an end on Thursday evening, September 8, 2016, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte formally accepts the chairmanship for 2017 which is, coincidentally, the organization’s 50’s anniversary.
While a number of Filipinos were surprised and definitely proud about the good news, many were not pleased that the more diplomatic Pres. Benigno Aquino III had become an ASEAN Chairman whereas the ‘rough’ Pres. Duterte becomes chairman – and on his first time to attend the Summit at that!
Well, the answer here is that Duterte was not really chosen to become the ASEAN Chairman but became one because of the scheduled rotation. All the countries under the ASEAN get the chance to become the host for the year and, in turn, their leaders (presidents, prime ministers, kings/queens, etc.) become the automatic chairman, too.
