Nader Essam Assaf, the Lebanese national tagged as primary suspect in the torture and murder of Filipina domestic helper Joanna Demafelis, claimed it was his wife Mona Hassoun who beat up the maid but he admitted that she was still alive when he placed her in the freezer, reported Bombo Radyo Iloilo.
Assaf has been arrested and is now under the custody of Interpol Lebanon but reports are conflicting whether he had actually been arrested in Syria alongside his wife or at his house in Lebanon.
The first reports that came out revealed that Assaf had been arrested in Lebanon but claimed he had no idea about his wife’s whereabouts; though he thinks she is in Syria. But a Lebanese judicial official claimed the two were arrested together in Damascus, the capital of Syria.
“The couple were arrested in Damascus. They were the subject of an Interpol red notice and the Syrian authorities handed the husband over to Lebanese custody on Friday morning,” this official claimed.
The official further claimed that the couple traveled from Kuwait to Lebanon, around 1,500km apart. After a brief stay in Lebanon, the two proceeded to Syria where they were caught by the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).
While the wife was jailed in Syria, Assaf was turned over to Lebanese police.
Assaf’s testimony supposedly corroborates his mother’s statement to the press that it was his wife who had been abusing the domestic helper.
Whether he had been beating Demafelis or not, he still had a hand in her death; he reportedly admitted to the cops that he panicked when the domestic helper fell unconscious to the floor after receiving severe beatings from his wife. So, he hauled her to the chest freezer, even though he knew she was still alive.
The corpse was curled up when it was found inside the freezer, indicating that Demafelis was still alive and had suffered inside that freezer before eventually dying. What a horrible way to die.
The two definitely deserves to be hanged to death! Because Kuwait still imposes capital punishment, the couple will face death penalty by hanging or firing squad should they be proven guilty but netizens wished they would also be tortured the same way they did to Demafelis so they can ‘properly pay’ for the crime they committed.
As of press time, police have yet to release photos of the suspects in custody but their arrests have been confirmed by the Interpol and the Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
