At 11:41 am on January 14, 2018, veteran actor Spanky Manikan passed away at the age of 75.
Ed Instrella received the sad news from Susan Africa, the wife of Spanky, saying the actor had joined his Creator on Sunday morning. Susan also asked for prayers for her husband’s eternal rest.
“Please pray for his eternal peace and happiness. Thank you for everything.”
Spanky was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer and had been in and out of the hospital for various complications in August 2017. In the same month, a fund-raising campaign tagged as “Sunday for Spanky” was raised by his friends after co-star Nanding Josef made an announcement of his condition on Facebook. The campaign aimed to help and support Spanky’s medical expenses for his treatments had drained their family’s savings.
At that time, Spanky who played the role of Mr. Jang of GMA 7’s adaptation of Korean drama “My Love From the Star” had been replaced by Crispin Pineda after he suddenly left the show because of health problems.
Spanky is an actor for theater, film, and television. In 1972, he started his career as a theater artist with the Philippine Educational Theater Association in a production of “Halimaw“. Since then, he had acted in various theaters like Dulaang UP, Bulwagang Gantimpala, Tanghalang Pilipino and the Cultural Center of the Philippines, to name a few.
Among his awards, Spanky won as the Best Supporting Actor at the Metro Manila Film Festival in 1981 and Best Supporting Actor for “Himala” given by the Catholic Mass Media Awards.
Manuel Manikan (real name) was born on March 22, 1942.
