Actor and TV host Paolo Ballesteros defended 2017 Binibining Pilipinas International Mariel de Leon from bashing of netizens from the time she failed to take home the crown during the recent Miss International competition. Paolo said Mariel, being our country’s representative in the pageant, deserved to be supported than to be bashed.
On November 15, in an interview with PEP during the press conference of his movie, “Trip Ubusan; The Lolas vs. Zombies” held in Quezon City, Paolo said he knew what Mariel was going through after her defeat. However, he said, having bashers and haters on social media is part of being in the showbiz industry.
Paolo added that it wasn’t fair for Mariel to be blamed for being unable to win in the beauty pageant. He said Mariel had represented our country and we need to support her instead of judging her.
He also said that we should serve as supporters, not bashers, not judges. After all, there are judges on the pageant whose work is to look after each candidate as to who among them deserved to be crowned at the end of the event.
Paolo claimed that having bashers is one of the reasons why many beauty enthusiasts don’t want to join beauty pageants. They are afraid to receive negative criticisms and be judged by people who don’t actually know them.
But then, Paolo said, should someone find something not pleasing about a candidate, they should just keep it among themselves and not share it on social media because it will not be of any help to the candidate.
When being asked, Paolo admitted he also gets hurt every time someone is bashing Mariel.
He then challenged others to join the pageant instead of bashing the candidates.
