Married for 16 years, Aga Muhlach and Charlene Gonzales are certainly among the best couples in Filipino showbiz but there’s a sweet secret that the actor recently shared to fans – he proposed to Charlene even if she was not his girlfriend!
On “Magandang Buhay”, Aga revealed that the proposal happened while they were taping for ‘90s ABS-CBN sitcom “Oki Doki Doc”.
He recalled that he had been crushing on Charlene but hadn’t told him about his feelings yet. A week before they were set to fly to Singapore, Aga talked to his mom and revealed that there’s a possibility he might be getting married.
His mom nonchalantly asked whether he was going to marry Charlene, actually seeing her son’s affection even before he told her about it! Ah, mom’s instinct, eh?
“We left for Singapore. We had taping for ‘Oki Doki Doc’ but a week before that, I spoke to my mom. Sabi ko sa mom ko, ‘Mama, mag-aasawa na yata ako.’ Alam mo sabi ng nanay ko? ‘Sino, si Charlene?’ Yun pala, nakikita pala nila sa taping ‘yung alaga ko kay Charlene or kapag napag-uusapan si Charlene, kung paano daw ako magsalita,” the actor said.
He added, “So we went to Singapore for taping. She was feeling something. Pinaparamdam ko na rin sa kanya na there’s something. And then I just proposed to her, walang singsing. If she said no, then doon ko siya liligawan. Sabi ko, ‘Will you marry me?’ And she said, ‘Yes.’ Naiyak ako.”
While he was a bit shocked that Charlene even said ‘Yes’ to his proposal even if she wasn’t his girlfriend and he didn’t even have a ring to give her, he was overwhelmed – and wasn’t about to complain about it, of course!
When they got married, Aga asked Charlene why she accepted his proposal.
“Sabi niya, ‘I don’t know. Because I know you. I saw something in you.’ Kumbaga kahit babaero daw ako noon, she saw the goodness in me dahil hindi ako nagpapa-impress sa kanya. She’s always seen the real me,” he happily revealed.
And because he wasn’t able to court her, he did so all throughout their marriage – and it is probably the secret as to why their marriage has lasted this long, a rarity in the world of showbiz.
He further revealed, “Maraming hindi nakakaalam nito. Kaya ako late lumalabas ng bahay parati because when we wake up every day since we got married, we will need three to four hours of talking every day. Not a single day na walang ganun talaga. That’s something that works for us. I am glad that it is like that.”
Awwwww! Isn’t that the sweetest thing?
