Russian Tourist Allegedly Kills Endangered Turtle in the Philippines, Gets Jailed

An alert ‘bantay dagat’ (sea patrolman) caught a Russian tourist who allegedly killed an endangered turtle at a marine sanctuary off the coast of Dauin, Negros Oriental in central Philippines.

Dauin police chief Insp. Bernabe Rubio revealed that their unit received a call from the Dauin Mayor Neil Credo to check on reports that a bantay dagat had caught Russian tourist carrying a dead Green Sea turtle.

Upon arriving at the marine sanctuary in Masaplod Sur, Dauin, they were met by Bantay Dagat member Froilan Bantayanon who narrated that he had seen 35-year-old Anton Likharev snorkeling. The tourist hails from Vladivostok, Russia.

At first, Bantayanon didn’t mind the tourist as he thought the foreigner was just taking underwater photos but the latter soon acted suspiciously, producing what looked like a spear. Bantayanon waited at shore but monitored what the Russian was doing.
